Pakistan Update: Rev. El Shafie Returns with Evidence of Horrors

Dear Friends and Partners,

A Ruined Home in Korian PakistanRev. El Shafie returned last month from another fact-finding mission to Pakistan where he visited two Christian towns that were attacked by Islamic extremists about two months ago. He spoke with victims and collected eyewitness testimony of the attacks which he is using on the political and community levels to raise awareness of what is happening to minorities in Pakistan. He used the visit to also set in motion a relief operation to provide assistance to those who lost everything in the attacks.

As we explained in an earlier alert, Christians were forced to flee their homes in Korian and Gojra, two towns near Faisalabad, when Islamic extremists from neighbouring towns went on a rampage, burning and looting Christian homes. A total of about 110 houses and a church were burnt while Muslim mobs blocked roads to prevent the arrival of fire response crews. At least 14 Christians died and many more were left with severe burn wounds. One of the sites Rev. El Shafie visited was the remains of a home where seven members of one Christian family were burned alive by the mob, which barricaded them in their home blocking their escape.House Where Christian Family Burned Alive by Muslim Extremists

Eyewitnesses told Rev. El Shafie that after the initial attack in Korian on July 30, four mosques in the area openly declared jihad against the Christians, inciting Muslims to continue their attacks. Despite being present and witnessing the threats, authorities did nothing to provide additional security and police fled the scene when the attacks began on August 1. An estimated 10,000 armed Muslim men attacked Gojra, a village of 3,000 Christians and other minorities, yet police arrested only about a couple of dozen Muslims of whom most were quickly released. In addition, the authorities also arrested two Christian brothers, Naveed Shahoo, 30, and Noaman Shahoo, 23, to satisfy MuslimBurnt Pages of Bible extremists. The brothers are being blamed for the violence in order to deflect attention from the fact that the attacks were triggered by false allegations of blasphemy at a Christian wedding. They continue to be held in a prison in Faisalabad where they have reportedly been beaten and abused by authorities.

Following the attacks, Muslim groups demanded that any police complaints against Muslims be dropped and threatened further attacks against the Christian community. These incidents follow on the heels of increasing violence against Christians and other minorities in Pakistan which has heightened tension and caused great concern among minorities for their safety. Makeshif shelter after korian attacks OFWI operations such as this latest mission to Pakistan are very dangerous and costly. We are grateful for your continued prayers for Rev. El Shafie’s safety and, if you are able, for your financial support (donation information is provided below). Please remember that without your participation through your prayers and financial support it would be impossible for us to do this critically important work. By supporting One Free World International you enable us to bring hope to our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering indescribable persecution solely because of their faith.

As a result, please continue to pray:

• for the Christians of Korian and Gojra, for swift healing for those who have suffered severe burns or lost loved ones, for comfort and peace in the midst of chaos and great pain, and for protection from further attacks;

• for Naveed and Noaman Shahoo, that they would be filled with courage and faith to endure their ordeal and that they would be protected from harm and released from prison quickly;

• that the Christians of Pakistan would respond to these attacks in a way that demonstrates the love, forgiveness, and authority of Christ;

• that the Islamic extremists would be exposed and prevented from causing more harm and that they would recognize the futility and evil of their actions and experience true peace through the Prince of Peace; and,

• that the people of Pakistan would be able to live together in peace and harmony regardless of their religious differences.

ACTION:

The Bible teaches that faith without action is dead, so please take action urgently and write (contact details are included below):

• to the High Commissioner or Ambassador of Pakistan to your country demanding the immediate release of Naveed and Noaman Shahoo without charge as well as the immediate repeal of the country’s Blasphemy Laws which encourage incidents like Korian and Gojra; urge the government of Pakistan to uphold its international commitments and the human rights of its citizens, to the benefit of all of Pakistan, by stopping Islamist attacks against Christians and other religious minorities; and,

• to the Minister of Foreign Affairs or Secretary of State in your country, insisting that they take all possible measures to ensure the immediate release of Naveed and Noaman Shahoo; advise them that they must hold the Pakistani government to account over its handling of Christian and minority rights and they must insist that Pakistan take appropriate and effective measures to repeal the Blasphemy Laws and stop Islamist attacks.

Please remember to send us a copy of your correspondence at: info@onefreeworldinternational.org

Remember, that the persecuted Christians are dying every day, but they are still smiling.  They are in a very deep dark night, but they have the candle of the Lord. The enemy can have a very strong weapon and a very strong army, but we have the Lord Almighty.

"They can kill the dreamer, but they cannot kill the dream" in the Lord’s name.

Be with God and may God be with you.

Christians Burned Alive in Pakistan

Christians-Burned-Alive-in-Pakistan-in-House-by-Extremists.jpg

Christians Burned Alive in Pakistan

Dear Friends and Partners,

Christians Burned Alive in Pakistan in House by ExtremistsOver the last week Christians in two towns near Faisalabad in Pakistan fled their homes as Islamic extremists went on a rampage, burning and looting Christian homes. These riots began after Christians were falsely accused of blaspheming the Quran during a July 25 wedding. On July 30, 60 houses were burnt in the village of Korian and on August 1, in the nearby village of Gojra, 50 houses and a church were burnt to the ground. At least 14 Christians are dead and many more suffering from severe burns and unable to obtain medical help. Several of the 14 dead were burned alive in their homes while Muslim mobs blocked roads in order to prevent the arrival of fire response crews.

The authorities’ response to these events has been grossly inadequate. After the Korian attacks, provincial authorities took no action to rein in the rioters or to prevent the attacks in Gojra. Reinforcements were slow to arrive, at one time reportedly leaving four police officers tasked with controlling the mob of thousands of Muslims who were being incited by loudspeakers from local mosques and vehicles.

A committee struck to investigate the Korian attacks included no Christians and only after Christians demonstrated for several hours, refusing to bury their dead from Gojra, was any action taken against the rioters or those who incited them. On the other hand, a first information report under Pakistan’s Blasphemy Laws was lodged swiftly against the Christian parents of the bride. Two security officials who played key roles in the inadequate security response have not been suspended or arrested even though they are named in the complaint. Furthermore, Muslim groups held a press conference on August 5, demanding that the complaints against Muslims be dropped and threatening further attacks against the parents of the bride and the Christian community.

These attacks follow on the heels of increasing attacks, including previous similar attacks, against Christians and other minorities in Pakistan. Rev. El Shafie intends to follow up on his previous visits to Pakistan by visiting the affected area shortly. Please keep him in your prayers regarding his safety and provision and, if you are able, please assist us with the financial demands of this mission (donation information is provided below).

Please pray:

• for the Christians of Korian and Gojra, for swift healing for those who have suffered severe burns or lost loved ones, comfort and peace in the midst of chaos and great pain, and that they would be kept safe from further attacks;

• that the Christians of Pakistan would be filled with comfort and peace and that they would respond to these attacks in a way that demonstrates the love, forgiveness, and authority of Christ;

• for Rev. El Shafie’s safety and provision when he travels to Pakistan; and,

• that the people of Pakistan would be able to live together in peace and harmony regardless of their religious differences and that the Islamic extremists would be exposed and prevented from causing more harm.

Egyptian Christian Community Under Attack

Egypt-Map.jpg

Christian community under attack – Egyptian government blames Christians

Dear Friends and Partners,

Two villages in Egypt have recently been engulfed in violence in separate incidents involving attacks by Muslims on the Christian community. The Egyptian government is trying to use these incidents to promote the marginalization and repression of the Christian minority. As a result, we must speak up on behalf of truth and justice and demand fair treatment for our Egyptian brothers and sisters.

Egypt Maphe first incident began on June 29, when an 18-year-old Muslim named Mohamed Ramadan Ezzat died in hospital after he was stabbed during a dispute with Emil Gerges, a Christian shop-owner in the village of Kafr El Barbari, north of Cairo. Seeking revenge for Ezzat’s death, his family attacked and burned Gerges’ store and two apartments owned by the Gerges family. On July 1, 2009 the violence spread to the Christian community in general as hundreds of Muslim mourners attending Ezzat’s funeral attacked Christian homes breaking windows and injuring 25 people. In the aftermath of the violence, Christian villagers fled or were remaining indoors in fear of further attacks.

The Egyptian government is using this incident as proof that Christians are to blame for such clashes. The Christian community is frustrated and angry, however, because this episode is consistent with other common cases that follow a familiar pattern in which a Christian kills a Muslim in self-defense resulting in a riot by Muslims. In this case Gerges had been forced to pay jizya, a kind of protection money demanded by Muslims from Christians in Egypt and other Muslim countries. When Ezzat attended at the store to collect the jizya, Gerges told him he could no longer afford to pay and offered items from his store. Ezzat then physically attacked Gerges, whose 20-year-old son, John, stepped in to protect his father, wounding Ezzat.

Emil Gerges and his two sons were arrested and remain in prison where it is feared they are being tortured, while his wife, who was also arrested, was released for health reasons shortly afterward. Ezzat’s family continues to threaten the Gerges family with revenge if they are not punished by the courts.

In a separate incident on July 3, Muslims in the village of Ezbet Guirgis set fire to a warehouse damaging two buildings. The warehouse was next to a building owned by the village church, which had applied for a permit to convert the building to church use. Existing facilities for the village’s 1400 Christians, who are limited to an old building that is smaller than 400 square feet, are woefully inadequate. Even so, the permit was denied but a rumour spread among the village’s 400 Muslims that the church planned to use the building anyway, which the village priest denied. In addition to the warehouse, the Muslims also tried to burn cars belonging to the church and the priest. Police arrested 11 Coptic Christians and 5 Muslims and there is concern that authorities are trying to torture one of the Christians into taking responsibility for the fires. There are also concerns that the village priest will be forced to leave the area as in a similar case in a nearby town in June.

In the wake of these incidents authorities ordered a curfew in both villages and restricted or at least monitored access. Tensions are high among Christians throughout Egypt who already fear that any minor incident could quickly escalate into major violence with authorities laying the blame on Christians.

Please pray:

• for Emil Gerges and his family, that they would have courage and be comforted in the midst of their ordeal and that the authorities would treat them with fairness and justice in keeping with truth;

• that the family of Mohamed Ramadan Ezzat would stop threatening the Gerges family and that they would encounter the Prince of Peace and experience the only true peace that can comfort and console them for the death of their son and brother;

• for the Christians of Kafr El Barbari and Ezbet Guirgis, and throughout Egypt, that they would be strengthened and comforted in this time of difficulty and be filled with a spirit of unity to stand up on behalf of truth and justice for the Christian community; and,

• that the Egyptian authorities would stop misrepresenting the facts in order to justify their continued marginalization and repression of the country’s Christian minority and that they would recognize the importance for the strength and future of their country of treating all Egyptians fairly and equally and respecting their human rights, regardless of their religion.

ACTION:

The Bible teaches that faith without action is dead, so please take action urgently and write to (contact details are included below):

• the Egyptian embassy in your country, demanding that the government stop misrepresenting the facts and blaming Christians for attacks against their own communities and that it take effective measures to stop such attacks and to ensure that the human rights of Christians and other minorities are respected and that all Egyptians are treated equally without respect to their religion; and,

• the Minister for Foreign Affairs or Secretary of State for your country, insisting that they make human rights and religious freedom a priority issue in their relations with Egypt.
