Religious Minorities Attacked in Bangladesh

Christian and Hindu minority communities have been violently targeted by extremists in Bangladesh. Temples and churches have been vandalized, families attacked, and warnings of escalating violence including death threats have people living in a state of fear.

Large student protests escalated into a full-on democratic revolt in Bangladesh, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Hasina who has since fled the country. Now dubbed the “July Revolution” or “Gen Z Revolution,” Islamic extremists in the Muslim-majority country have used the instability to carry out sectarian attacks on religious minorities.

One Free World International’s team on the ground in the country’s capital, Dhaka, and are in contact with underground churches across the country and will continue to monitor for developments, and if necessary, appeal for targeted mobilization to help the Christian community under siege in their own owns.

While many are hopeful this mass protest will lead to better democratic outcomes in Bangladesh, a new government must uphold human rights and the rule of law, including religious freedom, for the long-term benefit of all Bangladeshis.
