Thank You Hamas: The World Knows Your Hate and Jews are United to Defeat It
Majed El Shafie has written an open letter thanking Hamas for revealing its hateful ideology for what it it and united Jewish people around the world to rebuild Israel into a stronger Jewish state.
Dear Hamas,
In the aftermath of your horrific October 7th terrorist attack in Israel, millions around the world have felt compelled to reflect on what has transpired over the past three months. Your gruesome attack was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust and claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 Israelis. So, to Hamas leadership living lavishly in Qatar, and to Hamas terrorists hiding in tunnels underneath hospitals and schools in Gaza, this open letter is addressed to you.
The world has witnessed your true character. Women were brutally raped. Families burned alive. Babies beheaded. Even today, we are still learning more about your unthinkable, barbaric acts of cruelty committed against innocent people just for the mere fact that they are Jewish. As one of the most persecuted groups of people throughout world history, Jews around the world are no stranger to being the target of hate crimes and antisemitism. Your attack, and the world’s response in the three months that have followed, serve as a disappointing reminder that they continue to be under assault.
That is indeed one of the many reasons why Israel was created, and why its existence continues to be so close to the hearts of Jews worldwide.
While the pain and grief are palpable, it is important to acknowledge that while in your attempt to silence, scare, and eliminate the Jewish people, you have also emboldened their resilience and drive to exist, living proudly as they are. If there is one thing the Jewish people have proven time and time again throughout history, it is that they are resilient beyond measure and not to be underestimated.
Firstly, thank you for revealing the ugly face of terrorism and barbarism for all to see. While some extremists in our society try to brand you as freedom fighters for the Palestinian cause, you have successfully dispelled any of those myths among reasonable people. Your only goal, as you have now stated publicly, is to create chaos, destroy the State of Israel, and kill as many Jews as possible in an effort to create an oppressive Islamic state.
Rather than make any efforts to protect your own people, you instead use them as shields to defend yourselves. You steal their humanitarian aid and establish command centers beneath hospitals and schools, while being fully aware of the deadly consequences.
The stark contrast between the dire circumstances of the Palestinian people and the opulent lifestyles of your leadership in Qatar serves as a poignant reminder of your misplaced priorities. The absence of safe shelters for Palestinian civilians exposes the callous disregard for human life that underpins your barbaric actions.
Secondly, thank you for unwittingly shining a spotlight on the dark underbelly of global antisemitism. While many activists and protestors passionately rally for the Palestinian cause, the selective nature of their outrage raises troubling questions.
Where were these same demonstrators when Afghans were suffering under the Taliban's oppressive rule? Why did the streets in cities like Toronto, London, and New York remain silent in the face of Iranian women enduring persecution, or when Bashar al-Assad unleashed a litany of war crimes in Syria? What happened to the social media posts about the Chinese Communist Party's ongoing genocide of the Uyghurs, or ISIS's horrifying atrocities against the Yazidis and Iraq’s minority Christian community?
This all underscores a concerning pattern. It is disheartening that pro-Palestine activists reserve their fervor only when Israel, the world's only Jewish state, is involved, while refusing to call out all others.
Lastly, you should be commended for unintentionally catalyzing unity within the global Jewish community and fortifying Israel's resilience to will to exist and defend itself. The tragedy of October 7 has evoked a renewed sense of solidarity among Jews worldwide, and while the circumstances are undeniably grim, the resilience and determination displayed by the Jewish community in the face of adversity is extraordinary. The world has witnessed the power of collective Jewish identity as communities worldwide rallied together to mourn the immeasurable loss and stand against the rising tide of antisemitism. Supporting those who lost loved ones and mobilizing to help rebuild the communities devastated in the south of Israel.
Your murderous rampage was meant to intimidate and instill fear in Jews not only in Israel, but globally. Not only have you sparked a renewed determination within Israel but your actions have also illuminated the strength inherent in global Jewish solidarity. As the Jewish community faces adversity, they stand united against hate, bigotry, and discrimination, turning tragedy into an opportunity for shared strength and resilience.
In concluding this letter, I want to extend my heartfelt wishes to all Palestinians enduring the oppressive rule of your leadership. It is my fervent hope that one day, Gaza will be liberated from the clutches of your tyrannical rule, allowing your people to live freely and pursue a better life. You unequivocally stand as the most formidable impediment to the freedom and safety of your own citizens, perpetuating a cycle of suffering that must be broken.
The best path to peace in the region, for both Israelis and Palestinians, is a world free from Hamas. You may have killed some dreamers, but you cannot kill the dream.
Sincerely,
Majed El Shafie
