After facing persecution, intimidation, and violence in Nigeria, Morufat Ogunkoya fled with her three children and filed an asylum claim in Canada. That claim has been denied, and for three years OFWI has been supporting the family with the support of community members to fight for justice and their safety.

The Canadian government has rejected the Ogunkoya’s “Humanitarian and Compassionate” application to remain in Canada. They have also rejected their “Pre-Removal Risk Assessment” and have ordered the family to be deported. We will keep fighting for justice and ensure they are not sent back to Nigeria to face persecution for their Christian faith and the risk of death from radical Islamists who have threatened them. In case you forgot, Nigeria is the country where Boko Haram and other lesser known extremists operate with near impunity.

There is still hope they can stay safe in Canada, and we need your help to make it happen! The CBSA officer reviewing the files ignored over 1,500 pages of supporting documentation. It was clear from their written explanation that they did not read the material they had a duty to review that was a part of the application. The officer got basic facts about where the family has been and what they have been doing while pleading for Canada to grant them refuge.

Given this case is life or death, we are shocked the officer would seek to cut corners. The next steps to help this poor family is an appeal of this bad CBSA decision to the Federal Court! Our legal team is already working hard to prepare the filing and we have received assurances they will not be deported while their case is before the courts.

We will never give up until the family is legally allowed to remain in Canada as a land of refuge from the persecution they face back home in Nigeria.
